The Altar of Consciousness
So here it is, the Altar of Consciousness. My magnum opus of projects is the culmination of my studies at Carnegie Mellon. It was displayed like that at our senior show in the formal gallery on campus, which ran April 20 to May 17, 2004.
From the top weve got, "Mandala: Formless Enlightenment", "Glitter Tree: Deity Enlightenment", "Phoenix: Archetypal Consciousness, and "Evolution of Life: the Ecstatic Human Potential". It is my homage to the four basic levels of consciousness. Each image was received in astounding visions throughout the years. Each one of those paintings took me about 5 months to complete, meaning about 250-300 hours each.

So this is my vision. This is what started it all, my spiritual journey documented in my art. . . except , of course when I saw it, it was 4-dimensional (yes, it was 4D. . . I saw all "sides" of it at once, the top, the sides and from underneath at the same time). And it was spiraling in on itself. All of my paintings originate from my visions or meditations and they all move. So I do my best to convey these moving layers as if they were frozen for a moment in clarity. For example, this painting has about 25 layers of a liquin, damar varnish and paint mixture. For those who dont know, liquin is a thick gooey paint medium which, when it dries, becomes transparent and plastic-like.
As for the Mandala itself, when it came to me, I didnt know what to think. It is more now in retrospect that I understand the complexity and depth of this vision and yet I still dont have the correct words to fully explain it, or really, to even begin to describe that tremendous intensity verbally. Thus, I let my image speak for itself.
I donated this painting to the Memorial Hospital Arts Medicine Program in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was accepted in their Art for Healing Gala which was a silent auction, proceeds benefitting the Hospital. My painting didn't sell, so I decided to donate it anyway. It is on permanent display in the hospital's collection. And so, my first born is out in the world by himself, healing others like it helped me.

One day my professor was lecturing on the topic of spiritual/holy light when he began talking about "The Flower Ornament Scripture," the book after the Tibetan Book of the Dead. He passed the book around and when i got a chance to look at it, I began to giggle as i read the pages. The descriptions were unlike anything I have ever read. Even the words themselves seemed to laugh and emanate light from some very brilliant source. He let me borrow it because I could barely seperate myself from the text at the end of class.
So, as i was perusing the pages, I happened upon the following quotation which instantly exploded in my mind and branded its image on my eyes. All I uttered in my awe struck daze was,"glitter."
The tree of Enlightenment was tall and outstanding. Its trunk was diamond, its main boughs were lapis lazuli, its branches and twigs were of various precious elements. The leaves, spreading in all directions, provided shade, like clouds. The precious blossoms were of various colors, branching twigs spread out their shadows. Also the fruits were jewels containing a blazing radiance. They were together with the flowers in great arrays. The entire circumference of the tree emanated light; within the light there rained precious stones and within each gem were enlightening beings, in great hosts like clouds, simultaneously appearing.
Also, by virtue of the awesome spiritual power of the Buddha, the tree of Enlightenment constantly gave forth sublime sounds, speaking various truths without end.

SOLD. In the collection of Russell Komaromy.

Death and rebirth, light and dark, male and female, eternity. When we move beyond our normal state of existence, we realize that there are intrinsic symbolisms that we as human beings have conjured up throughout our history. Originally in our myths and as our gods, then slightly more abstractly in dreams, our minds have always created images from the same patterns and cut our stories from the same cloths. These are the first glimpses that we all have the potential to know something greater. We all have the inherent ability for higher consciousness and seemingly inborn into our awareness, weve been on the journey for its fulfillment since essentially the very beginning of our species.
SOLD. In the collection of Dan and Ann Bralliar.

Time and evolution have shaped and formed the amazing diversity of life we have on the planet today. We, as humans, have also evolved considerably since our divergence from our ancestors. In our journey, we must remember that we are all part of this earth, woven into the intricate spiders web of life, and not above it. We also must remember that within each and every one of us, there exists a great potential for higher states of consciousness and enlightenment. We all have the ability to dissolve our ego, to transcend and become one and become whole with the energy, the quiet divinity, within us and abounding around us.
