I believe that art has a responsibility on many levels. I have a lot of theory, research and personal experience behind my work, but the large majority of people who stumble upon my work will not know all of that. But that doesnt mean that those people should be denied enjoying my artwork. There are too many people who avoid art because they claim they cant understand it. I believe this is fundamentally wrong. Art shouldn't be so elitist that it scares off the general public. Instead, art should be embraced as a part of all of our souls, as something within us that reflects the black and white and even the gray of both the world within us and the world around us.
I want my art to have something for everyone. If all a person walks away with after viewing my work is that they think its beautiful, thats enough for me. There is something about beauty that transcends and can overcome built up prejudices and in this world where there is so much to become disappointed in, disheartened, angry and grief stricken about, we need all the beauty we can get. Despite all of the horror in the world, there is still so much beauty all around us, in the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, in a lovers embrace, in a friends helping hand. Beauty is in everything, we just need to get used to seeing it again.
