Echidna, Mother of Monsters
Echidna, Mother of Monsters
Mische Technique (oil and egg tempera) on canvas
16" x 20"

Echidna is a Greek primordial goddess, partner to the infamous Typhon. She gave birth to Greek Mythology’s greatest monsters that challenged gods and heroes alike. But before they were the giant and powerful beings of legend, they were toddlers and were probably driving Echidna nuts on some days. Here she sits, in their primordial swamp home, gazing off into nothingness for a moment of peace while Chimera and Sphinx get into yet another altercation, Cerberus is doing something dangerous and naughty, and Hydra is still just clinging to her tail, all day every day.
