Hades and Persephone
Hades and Persephone
Mische technique (oil ad egg tempera) on board
18" x 24"
2021

Persephone and Hades is a retelling of the well-known Greek myth. This painting seeks to put Persephone in her power as Queen of the Underworld, not as a victim story, but as a stepping into full womanhood story. It may be time to reframe a story that has come down to us via a specific lens, and not even the only lens with which it was viewed in antiquity by a long shot. The “Rape” of Persephone was a misogynistic take on a myth that had many other versions, many of which were not as one-sided. I offer this painting as a reclamation, an energetic intention to honor the powerful cultic tradition of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, patron goddess of the dead and rebirth, lover and partner of Hades.
This is in my private collection. Giclee prints available upon request.
